Stay in the Know

Good Morning EVA Students, Parents, and Staff.

We have a lot of important announcements; therefore, please read the email carefully:

·         The lab will be opened five days a week:

o   Monday and Wednesday 8 AM – 12 PM

o   Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 PM – 4 PM

o   Friday 8:30 AM – 12:30 PM

·         Ms. Riggs’ tutoring hours are listed below. YOU DO NOT NEED AN APPOINTMENT FOR TUTORING; SIMPLY SHOW UP!

o    Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays  8:30 AM – 12:30 PM

o   Tuesdays and Thursdays 12 PM until 4 PM.

·         We have three weeks left in this quarter. Therefore, progress reports will be given weekly. There are required units that must be completed on or before Friday, October 6, 2017, which means ALL tests must be done by noon – the time the lab closes. No student will be allowed to sign in after 11 AM. Also, remember that all incomplete units are assigned a 0 and students who fail two or more courses will be transitioned back to the traditional school.

·         Beginning this week, all past due or unfinished work in Connexus will be assigned a GIP. This is only to let the students and parents know that if the work is not completed this will be the realistic grade. As the work gets completed prior to October 6, the GIP will be deleted, and the actual grade will be inserted. Therefore, as the student completes a unit the overall average will increase. This is not a punishment, but a standard protocol that we use to show students that their work must be done.

·         Freshman (9th Grade), this message is for you:

o   The state department has gone to a company called Scantron for state testing. The state test has moved from testing 10th graders to testing 9th graders.

o   Because it is a progress monitoring test, the state requires a pre-screener in the Fall and the actual test in the Spring. After you take the pre-screener, you will get your results in 24 hours. These results will let you know where you stand and tell you objectives that you can focus on to prepare you for the Spring test and the ACT.

o   We will have the following days set aside for the pre-screening. Please look at these dates and times and email me to let me know which date you would like to come to get pre-screened. Guess what? You don’t have to go to your school to get this done. It will take place right here in our curriculum lab.

§  Thursday, September 21 at 8:30 AM (You can stay after to take any test for your regular courses. We will give you a light snack after your tests.)

§  Wednesday, September 22 at 12:30 PM (This test will take place immediately following the lab. You will be provided a light snack prior to starting your tests).

§  Thursday, September 28 at 8:30 AM (You can stay after to take any test for your regular courses. We will give you a light snack after your tests.)

·         Junior and Seniors, I have set aside Friday, September 22, 2017, to attend University of Mobile’s Preview Day. This event will be from 9 AM until 2 PM. I highly suggest that you attend this event. Studies show that students are more than likely to attend colleges that they actually visit. Visiting colleges is important for you to know what they offer and get a first-hand perspective if this school is right for you. If you would like to attend this event, I need you to do three things:

o   Register at www.umvisit.

o   Email me also so I know who to expect.

o   Show up at the designated place (Ram Hall) and time (8:30 AM) at UM.

·         Seniors, the following message is for you.

o   We have a scheduled senior meeting on Tuesday, September 19, 2017, at 9 AM in the curriculum lab. Parents, you are welcomed to attend.

o   MCPSS is hosting a College and Career Fair at the Fair Grounds. EVA’s students are scheduled to attend on Tuesday, September 26 from 11 AM until 12 PM. It is very imperative that you attend this event. You will be able to talk with recruiters, and many recruiters will waive the application fee is you apply on site. We will discuss this in the senior meeting and also register.

·         Taking the ACT is important for all students. You may not plan on going to college once you graduate; however, you may not know what life lies ahead. Take the test and get a score just in case. You just may score high enough to earn an academic scholarship. Connexus has ACT Prep courses. If you would like for me to add these courses to your portal, email me and let me know. These courses will NOT be monitored for pacing. They will be strictly for practice. Therefore, you can work on them in your spare time.

·         Juniors, the following message is for you:

o   We have a scheduled junior meeting for October 5, 2017, at 9 AM in the Curriculum Lab. This is a very important meeting; therefore, please make plans to attend.

o   Parents, you are more than welcomed to attend.

·         Parents and Students, I purposely list the assignments that are due every week. I CANNOT and WILL NOT accept the excuse of someone stating that they do not know the pacing and when assignments are due. We provided this information to you at orientation, it’s on the website (Resources-Forms), and I provide it to you in the weekly announcements.
